How to sign PDFs?

There are 2 ways to sign PDFs.

  • Electronic Signatures, also known as 'e-sign' or 'Fill & Sign'
  • Digital Signatures

Electronic Signatures

Electronic Signatures, also known as 'e-sign' or 'Fill & Sign', are legally binding in most countries. If you use reputated apps like Adobe Acrobat Reader to electronically sign PDFs, your PDFs are protected against tampering by others to some extent, but not fully protected.

Digital Signatures

Digital Signatures are a type of electronic signatures which involve using cryptography to sign PDFs in such a way that the signature becomes invalid if the PDF is modified, in effect making your PDF tamper-proof.

For digitally signing PDFs, you will need to get a digital signature certificate (DSC) from a certifying authority (CA) in your country.

The terms 'electronic signature' and 'digital signature' are sometimes used interchangeably.
